The AFC East has seen many great players come and go such as Tom Brady and Dan Marino. Nowadays football fans are accustomed to seeing players like Josh Allen or even the newcomer to the division, Tyreek Hill.
The AFC East has probably the most successful NFL team since 2000 and that team would be the New England Patriots. With six super bowl wins since 2002 the Patriots have seen the tops of the NFL peaks many times.
In this article we will look at each AFC East team’s biggest draft mistake, yes even New England.
Buffalo Bills: Aaron Maybin
The Buffalo Bills selected edge rusher Aaron Maybin with the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Penn State. The Bills and Maybin agreed to a four year 25 million dollar contract but Maybin only ended up playing half of that.
In just two years with the Bills Maybin never had a sack. Out of the 27 games Maybin did play with Buffalo he only started one of them. After the 2010 season Maybin was waived by the Bills in training camp.
After his short stint with Buffalo Maybin signed with the Jets, where he also only lasted two years before calling it a career in 2013.
Miami Dolphins: Dion Jordan
The Miami Dolphins selected edge rusher Dion Jordan with the third overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Oregon. The sad part about this pick is the Dolphins actually traded up to get him. The Dolphins were looking to pair him with star pass rusher Cameron Wake but it never really worked out that way.
Jordan only played two full seasons in Miami before being suspended for the entire 2015 season. When he came back in 2016 Miami did keep him around but never played him once that season. Jordan was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance policy.
Jordan only had three sacks and was released by the Dolphins in the 2017 offseason. Jordan later signed with the Seahawks and lasted two years there before signing with Oakland in 2019. Jordan is still currently a free agent but hasn’t played or been on a roster since 2020.
New England Patriots: Eugene Chung
The New England Patriots selected Offensive Lineman Eugene Chung with the 13th overall pick in the 1992 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech. Chung made history by becoming the first Korean/ American to be drafted in the first round. Unfortunately Chung’s NFL career was underwhelming to say the least.
Chung played just three seasons with the Patriots before being traded to Jacksonville for a year then to Indianapolis for another year before calling it quits after the 1997 season.
New York Jets: Dee Milliner
The New York Jets selected cornerback Dee Milliner with the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Draft analysts had Milliner labeled as a bust before he was even drafted. Milliner had a long injury history at Alabama and analysts advisied teams to be aware of that but the Jets took a chance and it did not pan out.
The Jets were desperate to replace Darrelle Revis who had departed to Tampa Bay in free agency. Things were looking up for the Jets and Milliner in his rookie year he recorded three interceptions and earned defensive rookie of the month honors.
However after his decent rookie season things went downhill from there. After his rookie season the injury issue came up again in his sophomore season and as a result of that he rarely saw the field in 2014. Milliner only played three seasons with the Jets before leaving in 2015 and he never played again after that.
