Justin Fields Possible Landing Spots
The 2021 NFL Draft is quickly approaching us and will start on Thursday, April 29th. This draft has been a very highly anticipated draft due to the incredible talent that is yet to be showcased in the NFL. As we all know, Trevor Lawrence is going No. 1 overall and is considered one of the greatest generational talents that we have seen in a long time now. Some people are even comparing him to the legendary Peyton Manning.
Although it is undoubtedly recognized that Trevor Lawrence is the most elite quarterback in this year’s draft, there has been a lot of talk about where Buckeye’s starting quarterback Justin Fields will go and his ability to perform in the NFL. He is such an elite quarterback and even beat Trevor Lawrence in the College Football Playoffs.
You know, I always found it interesting how teams take players’ college stats and pair them with different possible NFL teams to project the possible success of that player through the use of data analytics. Let’s take a look at Justin Fields’ possible landing spots in the 2021 NFL Draft and how those analytics pair with NFL teams interested in Mr. Fields.
Justin Fields New Home
Justin Fields is hands down the most accurate quarterback in this year’s draft. In fact, on passes that were at least 10 yards, he completed 56% of them were marked accurate. According to pff.com, Justin Fields has an overall passing rating of over 92 and has a 4.43 40-yard dash.
PFF Grade on throws past 1st read since 2019: (min. 60 attempts)
1st – Justin Fields – 90.6
2nd – Zach Wilson – 90.1
3rd – Trey Lance – 87.2
7th – Trevor Lawrence – 78.6
8th – Mac Jones – 75.7 pic.twitter.com/CEWpY86rwC

This is a huge advantage for Fields because not only is he accurate, but he has the speed to showcase, which can be a problem for defenses around the league.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers were originally interested in Alabama’s quarterback Mac Jones, but after another pro day for Justin Fields, it seems as if the 49er’s quarterback interests have shifted towards Fields. The data analytics seem to pair up just fine for Fields and San Fran. Additionally, I really enjoyed what NFL’s expert media analytics oracle Cynthia Frelund had to say about this when analyzing his projectability with San Fran:
“Fields’ ability to hit deep passes (50 percent completions on throws of 20-plus yards since 2019, per PFF, ranking sixth-best in the FBS), produce off play-action (146.4 passer rating in 2020, per PFF, third-best in the FBS) and connect on attempts of 10-plus air yards when his base is not set (55.5 percent since 2019, per my computer vision) is extremely promising for his NFL projection, particularly if he goes to a team like San Francisco with a strong offensive line.”
That being said, I would have to agree with her. San Francisco has a really strong line that will give Fields protection and even give him the ability to run out of the pocket while completing solid throws.

The Atlanta Falcons are definitely in the mix to draft Justin Fields. It makes sense for a rookie like fields to go to the Falcons simply because it is home. Fields was born and raised in Kennesaw, Georgia, which could make for a smooth and easier transition into the NFL as a rookie.
New York Jets
The New York Jets are certainly a long-shot, considering that it seems that they are pretty set on Zach Wilson. But Justin fields could be a great pick for Gang Green. Everyone knows that even tho the NY Jets play in New Jersey and are not encompassed by the concrete jungle that NYC is, the media load is almost the same.
That being said, Fields has been surrounded by a great amount of media due to constantly being under the spotlight in the NCAA. Therefore, he could use the media skills he has learned in college and apply them to the constant pressure of the New York media. Not only that, but Justin Fields would have a brand new coach, former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, an improving offensive line, and new weapons to work with such as Corey Davis, Denzel Mims, and Jamison Crowder. As I said, it’s a long shot, but you never know!
Other Justin Fields Possible Landing Spots
This draft is going to be one to remember and is certainly an exciting one. We’ll have to wait and see where Justin Fields goes.
