Mike White: The Jets Key to Making the 2022 Postseason

Football, NCAAF, CFB, NFL article at Knup Sports

Mike White is the obvious choice over Zach Wilson for the starting job in New York. See below why White remaining QB is essential for the Jets’ playoff Hopes

In what was his 5th career NFL start, Western Kentucky grad Mike White led the Jets to a demanding victory over the Chicago Bears last Sunday at the Meadowlands. Despite the weather not cooperating (something Zach Wilson would be quick to point out), White managed to complete 22 of 28 passes and throw for 315 yards against the struggling Bears’ defense.

Even though there are most likely family rosters from last Thursday’s Thanksgiving backyard football games that could score on the feeble Chicago defense, Mike White’s play should make the decision of who should start at quarterback easy for Head Coach Robert Saleh.

White’s Numbers are Far More Promising

In their win against the Bears, Mike White averaged just over 11 yards per attempt and had a passer rating of 149.3, which is over 48 rating points higher than Wilson’s career high. White also managed to avoid throwing an interception last Sunday, something his counterpart in the QB room has done 21 times in 20 career games.

The Jets new QB also seemed comfortable when evading pressure and only was sacked once by the Bears’ defense. This is a nod to the composure and sense of calmness White has shown at QB in his young career.

It’s evident that Mike White has come a long way from his few starts last season, and the Jets should be excited that they have at least a temporary fix as far as QB1 goes. Jets’ fans will be hopeful White as a temporary fix can help the Jets make the NFL playoffs.

Zach Wilson Just Doesn’t Pass the Eye Test

In the seven games he’s played this year, Wilson has looked downright awful. His inexperience in the league, combined with not being able to make the right decisions, has caused the Jets to lose multiple football games this year. In addition, his postgame comments and inability to accept responsibility after the 10-3 loss to the Patriots in Week 11 haven’t sat right with many of his teammates.

Mike White, on the other hand, provided a visible spark to a struggling Jets offense and had the hometown fans into it the whole game. With New York having one of the best defenses in the league, White has no need to change anything, make flashy plays and throw for 300+ yards every weekend.

Simply put, Mike White just has to keep the Jets’ offense in cruise control, something that Wilson has yet to do so far in his career.

What’s Ahead

The Jets will be heading on the road for week 13 to take on the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Minnesota is currently a 3-point favorite this Sunday as they’re coming off a Week 12 win versus New England. It will be interesting to see if Mike White can follow up his performance against Chicago in what should be a good contest against the Vikings.
