49ers vs Chiefs – Lance Looking to Strike Gold in First NFL Action

This Saturday. August 14th, the San Francisco 49ers are set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the preseason. One could argue that this game for the 49ers is the most anticipated preseason game in quite some time.

After all, the Niners did trade a lot of future draft capital in order to move up this year to select quarterback prospect, Trey Lance, with the third overall pick. From a fan’s perspective, all eyes will be on him to see what he can do in his first NFL action.

Despite head coach Kyle Shanahan calling veteran Jimmy Garoppolo the team’s starter, all reports out of camp suggest that Trey Lance has looked extremely impressive. In fact, Lance has been given some 1st team reps as of late because of his stellar play.

The plan going into the game against the Chiefs is for Jimmy Garoppolo to play the first series with the team, while Lance is expected to play the rest of the first half.

Considering how valuable Lance is to the 49ers’ future, it is surprising that San Francisco is electing to play him so much. Perhaps the coaching staff is just as excited as the fans to see what he can do.

If Lance can impress and put on a decent performance in his first outing, I would not be surprised at all to see the quarterback situation heat up going into Week 2 of the preseason, despite Shanahan downplaying it all during training camp.

Some other things to look out for the Niners is to see if any of the injured guys from last season such as Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert, etc. will see some playing time as well. If I had to guess I would expect Shanahan to play it cautiously in a meaningless game.

Kansas City’s Plan

For the Kansas City Chiefs, this game holds much less magnitude than it does compare to San Francisco.

Despite that, head coach Andy Reid mentioned that the starters would play the first quarter. He did not mention superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but one would think he would get some run given his comments.

Considering how last year ended for Kansas City, I would imagine Reid wants the starters to play with the revamped offensive line a little in order to get a feel for one another.

Once they get a few series going, I do not expect them to play much more thereafter. The main objective is to keep their guys healthy. If they are able to do that, there are not many teams that can match up with the Chiefs this season.

49ers vs Chiefs | Who Will Come Out on Top?

Picking the winner of a preseason game is much more difficult to predict than a regular-season one. Because the backups are expected to play most of the time, it is hard to know exactly how talented the back end of the roster is.

Nonetheless, I am taking the Niners in this one especially since Shanahan is expected to play Lance a good amount. Like I mentioned before, this game means much more for San Francisco than it does for Kansas City.

Therefore, I expect the Niners’ to be juiced up in this one.
