Earlier this week, the Titans and Bills battled it out on Monday Night Football. It was a highly contested game from start to finish, injuries threatening to take a win away from the Titans above all other things.

In a game that featured seven touchdowns, the Bills wanted to create an eighth. They had a fourth and one just a few yards out of the end zone. And the play was a Josh Allen run. Direct. No trickery. He was tripped up and stopped.

The Titans had been leading by three at the time, so a field goal could have tied it. But, nope. Sean McDermott made the call for them to go for it. And though they failed, he did not do the wrong thing. This was not too bold. It was what they needed.

You Play to Win the Game

While serving as the head coach of the Jets, Herm Edwards went off during a press conference. He said “You play to win the game!” And that line could not be more relevant here if it was written in gold on a canvas. The Bills needed to make a statement.

Sure, they were 4-1. They hadn’t lost since week 1. They have a great team and have showed other quality opponents who was in charge. But, it takes guts if you want to win the big games. They lost to the Chiefs in the playoffs last year, ending their Super Bowl dream before it could be accomplished.

The choice now was very simple. Kick and send the game to OT where you may lose because your defense was playing horribly. Or, go for it with your MVP-candidate QB. Forget about percentages and analytics. This was one man daring to be bold. And while it did fail, it proves that the Bills are holding nothing back this year.

Never Settle

If not for bold late-game calls going against them, the Kansas City Chiefs could be 5-1 right now. The Ravens went for it on fourth down in their own territory to ice the game, a move that could have cost them a victory if it backfired. And the Chargers tried to score a TD instead of kneeling on the ball to try a short field goal.

And both teams won. Brandon Staley also tried a fourth down attempt from the team’s own 19 in the THIRD quarter. This may have been a bit too much. But he wasn’t afraid of his team failing. And, neither is Sean McDermott.

Teams that won’t try to risk it to get the biscuit will not get anywhere fast. The team was a win away from the Super Bowl for a reason. They play hard and never throw in the towel.

All of the time Josh Allen has been at the helm, they have been a good football team. And their willingness to try new things has been a big part in their continued success and improvement. Watch for the Bills as they continue to fight on.

And remember, Sean McDermott’s team may have lost. But, he didn’t make the wrong call.
