Top 5 AFC Championship Contenders

Football, NCAAF, CFB, NFL article at Knup Sports

Making it to the super bowl will be a tough challenge for any team coming out of the AFC. The conference is very close this year, with many teams rising up to challenge the juggernauts of the conference. In the end there can only be one to play the last game of the season.

The American Football Conference is filled with good teams this year, but few stand as the elite of the elite who have a real shot of making a super bowl appearance. Each of these AFC teams are solid all around, with a record to prove it.

Baltimore Ravens

Led by the phenomenal AFC quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens have surprised the league this year by becoming a true contender. Although the Ravens had their troubles coming into the season with the drama surrounding Jackson and his salary, the Ravens and Jackson have torn through this season with a purpose.

The Ravens at the moment, stand at the top of the AFC North with a 5-3 record. As the Ravens continue on with the season, the biggest knock on the team to look out for is consistency.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have made serious improvements since last year, upgrading the team to an elite level. One of the biggest weak spots of the Chargers last year was their offensive line, who they were able to trade to improve and pick up Zion Johnson in the first round of the draft.

With solid protection now around Justin Herbert, the offense has been running like a well-oiled machine putting up solid numbers. One thing to look out for is if the Chargers will be able to perform after making the playoffs.

Kansas City Chiefs

Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs sit at the top of the AFC west, and it still looks just as good as years before. In the off-season the Chiefs would lose Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, and all of the pressure was put on quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes has surely stepped up as a quarterback and a leader for the team. Although the Chiefs offense hasn’t slowed down, the defense is still up in the air. Ranked 14th in the league, the defense will be a pivotal part of a deep playoff run.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals have had a slow start to the season but have quickly risen to the occasion. After winning the conference the year prior, most fans saw the Bengals run as a fluke. The Bengals have seemed to turn this narrative around, now sitting second in the AFC north behind the Ravens.

Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase have still been an elite duo on offense that is a threat to any team that they may face.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills have been on a revenge tour this year after losing to the Chiefs in overtime to end their season. Leading the way, Josh Allen has been dominating every team put in front of them; combine that with Stefon Diggs and the number one defense in the league, and this team is scary. And looks to have the best chances to earn a trip to the super bowl.
