While the NFL is filled with more talent than ever before, there is one position that lacks a deep, elite class of players. The tight end position will never receive the same glamor and attention as quarterbacks or wide receivers, however their impact on the game can be the difference between winning and losing.

They have more responsibilities than most other positions, as the top players are expected to be an elite run blocker and pass catcher on a consistent basis. This list will detail my picks for the best five tight ends in the NFL today.

Dallas Goedert

While the departure of Zach Ertz last season was a sad sight for many Eagles fans, they can be comfortable knowing that they got a replacement just as capable of being a star at the tight end position. South Dakota State of alumnus Dallas Goedert has developed into a magnificent tight end that fits perfectly in Philadelphia‘s offensive scheme.

In 2021 Goddard held in blank catches for blank yards and an impressive blank touchdowns. At 6 foot five blank pounds Gotter proves to be a terrific rumblocker for an Eagles offense that ranked first and rushing yards per gain a year ago. God is still young and has all the potential in the world to become a top tier tight end in this league.

Darren Waller

Plagued by injuries in 2021, Darren Waller remains one of the league’s premier pass catchers from the tight end position. Waller was drafted high in fantasy leagues after putting up 1200 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020. Waller did suffer a production dip, most notably at touchdowns with two in 2021, however he still has all the tools of an elite tight end in the NFL.

Waller is a wide receiver in a tight end’s body, as the 6’6” monster is a mismatch for both linebackers and safeties alike. With there being no true number one wide receiver in Las Vegas, Waller is commonly depended on to be a volume catcher and the top target. If he is able to remain healthy in 2022 I do not see why Waller cannot assert himself back into the top three at the position.

Mark Andrews

One could argue that no tight end had a better statistical season than Mark Andrews in 2021 after a campaign with 107 catches, 1,361 yards, and nine touchdowns. Although most of the Ravens team was getting injured last season, Andrews was a model of consistency for the team and had some of the best performances in the biggest games of the year.

The game that comes to mind first is his Monday Night Football game against the Colts, where he put up eleven catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns in a game where the Ravens came back from a 22-3 deficit. Andrews has officially reached the status of elite, and some fans may to even argue is the best tight end in the entire NFL.

George Kittle

Another popular choice for number one, I have the best run blocker in the entire NFL just shy of the top spot on the list. Despite being a fifth round pick in the NFL draft, Kittle has proven to be the perfect package at the position, as he is a wonderful receiving threat regardless of coverage along with being a vital piece to Kyle Shanahan‘s run game scheme.

Kittle has struggled to play a full season over the past couple years but when he is on the field nobody can sell his play short. His best season came back in 2019, the season San Francisco reached the Super Bowl. If Kittle is able to replicate that level of play, the argument for the top spot gets much more interesting.

Travis Kelce

In my opinion there should be no argument for who’s the number one tight end in the NFL. Travis Kelce is putting up numbers never seen from the position before, and with Patrick Mahomes, Kelce may shatter some Tony Gonzalez records when it is all said and done.

Kelce has lapped the record for most consistent 1,000 yard seasons from a tight end with six, and if his playoff performance is any indication, he is not slowing down anytime soon. His signature moment of the season had to be his crucial catch with only 13 seconds left to get the Chiefs in field goal position to beat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC divisional round.

Kelce is not only the best tight end in the NFL, but one of the best players regardless of position and has secured a spot in the NFL Hall of Fame.
