Offense
Quarterbacks:
Alex Smith will be around a long time in Washington. Last year was his best season to date as the QB in Kansas City. He replaces Kirk Cousins who moved on. Smith threw five interceptions last year and will find Colt McCoy as the trusted backup this year.
Running Backs:
There are many changes that are needed here. They attempted to address that problem in the NFL draft with Derrius Guice for LSU. Curtis Thompson returns and is best used as a third down running back. Samaje Perine hopes to have a better second season as he needs help on consistency.
Receivers:
Paul Richardson has been signed from Seattle and it is hoped his speed will generate some offense. Jamison Crowder will be a slot receiver as he had 66 catches last year. Josh Doctson will be used near the red zone and Jordan Reed will get time on the field. If he has any gas left, 34 yr-old Vernon Davis hopes to contribute.
Offensive Linemen:
Several linemen that are counted on had offseason surgery and may not be ready when the season rolls in. What they can count on is Shawn Lauvao to fill the left guard spot and Pro Bowler Brandon Scherff will be at right guard. In the draft, Geron Christian from Louisville was taken and he may get a chance to play the guard spot.

DEFENSE
Defensive Linemen:
This is a young squad that will need seasoning. Jonathan Allen should return from his injury to begin the season and Matt Ioannidis along with Anthony Lanier have been serviceable. Da’Ron Payne, from Alabama, was a first-round draft selection that is going to get some playing time right away.
Linebackers:
Zach Brown is back and more coverage is expected of him and Mason Foster returns from injury. Martrell Spaight is ready to play and Ryan Kerrigan along with Preston Smith are solid contributors.
Secondary:
In the fourth round of the NFL draft, the Redskins selected Montae Nicholson from Michigan State to play in the secondary. Josh Norman and Quinton Dunbar will be on the field as will Orlando Scandrick.
Special Teams:
Dustin Hopkins returns as the kicker as he was 14-for-17 field goals. Nick Sundberg is now entering his eighth season as the long snapper. Look for Greg Stroman to be the kick return specialist at the start of the season.
