Florida Panthers 2023 Takeaways, What to Look Forward to For 2024

The Florida Panthers fell to the Golden Knights by a score of 9-3 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals to fall in the series 4 Games to 1. The Las Vegas Golden Knights rose to the Cup for the first time in the history of their franchise, while Florida’s record in the Cup finals fell to 1-8 in their only two appearances.

The Panthers had one of the most memorable end-of-season and postseason runs NHL fans have ever witnessed. The Panthers qualified for the playoffs by the skin of their teeth and faced a serious elimination situation, down 3 games to 1 in the first round of the playoffs against the number one-seeded Boston Bruins.

In this article, I analyze the team from its awful form early on in the season and compare it to the style of play and passion the team was playing with down the stretch.

Early Season Woes

The Panthers began the season on troubling terms, with questions being raised of whether or not the revamped team with Matthew Tkachuk and new coach Paul Maurice would even be able to make the playoffs.

As the All-Star Break came, the Panthers were outside of a playoff spot and showed no resemblance of having the capabilities to push for a playoff spot.

Late Drama

It was only late in the season that the Panthers were able to find their game, but they found it just in time. The Panthers snuck into the playoffs as the 8th-seeded team and made the most of every opportunity they were afforded.

Trouble in Vegas

The Panthers failed to win a single game in Las Vegas during the series and were only able to win at home during game 3 of the finals, in a game where Matthew Tkachuk had to tie it up with minutes remaining to send it to overtime.

The Panthers, in fact, have lost every single game they have ever played in Las Vegas, dating back to the creation of the Golden Knights franchise in 2017.

“No One Saw It Coming”

I have written about the Florida Panthers countless times over the course of the season, and I maintained my stance that they would be one of the most dangerous teams come playoff time.

I even wrote an article in early April detailing how the Panthers were beginning to find their form and were my top bet to win the Eastern Conference.
