The Columbus Blue Jackets performed beyond expectations in the first week of the National Hockey League season. They won both of their contests and won them in both dominating and exciting fashions.
The Blue Jackets are an interesting team to predict their outcome for this season. They lost their star defenseman, Seth Jones and they departed from their Head Coach John Tortorella. This team has a ton of question marks heading into the 2021-22 season. One thing is for sure, they are the team of the week in Week 1 of the NHL season.
Win vs Arizona Coyotes 8-2
The Blue Jackets started their 2021-22 campaign with a bang. Their dominating performance was led by right-winger, Oliver Bjorkstrand who rattled off 2 goals and 2 assists in the contest.
Goaltender, Elvis Merzlikins saved 36 shots while recording his first win of the season. Forward Max Domi was able to contribute one goal and two assists and help secure the Blue Jackets first win of the season.
This was a great way to start the season with their new Head Coach Brad Larsen at the helm. Against a team that some look at as being equal on paper, the Blue Jackets sure made a statement in their first win of the season.
Win vs Seattle Kraken 2-1 OT
This was an exciting contest against the NHL’s newest franchise the Kraken. The Blue Jackets ultimately got the better of the new kids on the block from the shot of Patrik Laine who scored the overtime goal game-winner.
Merzlikins was once again steady in the net having 19 saves and only allowing one goal against to move his record to 2-0 on the season. Left-winger Eric Robinson scored the other goal for the Blue Jackets in the 3rd period.
What makes this game even more exciting is that the Jackets were down 1-0 after a Seattle goal and Columbus was able to execute a comeback against the newbies of the NHL.
All in all, it was a great week to start the season for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they start their season 2-0-0. If they can get a hot start and help out their Vezina hopeful goaltender, the Blue Jackets may be able to ride some momentum throughout the season and find themselves in a playoff spot at the end of the year.
