On March 31, 2014 the beloved series “How I Met Your Mother”, or HIMYM as fans abbreviate it, aired its final episode. Since then, despite controversial opinions surrounding the ending, there has been a yellow umbrella-shaped hole in all of our hearts.

Finally, 7 years later and after one cancelation of another planned sequel, fans have a new show to look forward to; however, it may be slightly different from the original. The brand-new HIMYM spinoff, dubbed as “How I Met Your Father” promises great things for true fans of the series!

HIMYM Spinoff: What You Need to Know

For those unfamiliar with the show, HIMYM follows Ted in his tumultuous search for his soulmate and the other aspects of his life along with those of his four friends. The story is told through him in the future telling the story of how he met his wife to his two children.

The sequel “How I Met Your Father”, HIMYF, will focus on Sophie, a new character, telling her son the story of how she met her child’s father.

The new narrative will be set in the year 2021, when Sophie and her friends are figuring out life with each other’s help. Since HIMYM ended, dating apps have become much more popular with many new options emerging from Bumble and Hinge to Tinder and Match.
HIMYM Spinoff Dubbed HIMYF
Even though the released information about the new show mirrors that of HIMYM, it has not been revealed as to whether the show will relate at all to the original.

Since the announcement of the upcoming show, fans have gone wild with predictions as to how the plot could tie into HIMYM. Much of these theories are surrounding who the mother and son could be related to in the original show.

Fans will recall that at the end of HIMYM, Barney finds out he has a daughter. There is a heartwarming scene in the hospital in which Barney confesses his love to his child, something he has never done before to a girl.

Sophie will be telling the story to a son, which takes away the possibility of the child being the same baby we saw in the original show. However, Barney was known for being a ladies’ man and this boy could be from one of his short-lived relationships.

There is also the possibility that the boy could be Barney’s grandchild and Sophie is Barney’s daughter. This would be a way to nod to the original show, without necessarily going into the same stories of the original characters.

Fans are hopeful that even though the original actors will not be main characters on the show, they will make some cameo appearances om the upcoming HIMYM spinoff.

We’ll Get At Least 10 Episodes of HIMYF

Along this same premise, some of the “inside jokes” of HIMYM may be passed down to these new friends. Slap Bets may be incorporated along with “sandwiches” and other legen – wait for it – dary references.

Hulu has officially ordered 10 episodes of the HIMYM spinoff with Carter Bays and Craig Thomas as executive producers, who produced HIMYM. This gives fans hope that this spinoff won’t be a bust with the same masterminds of HIMYM sitting at the reins.

However, the actual writing team will be new, consisting of those who created the popular NBC show “This Is Us”, which announced it will air its sixth season in early 2022.

Bays and Thomas released a statement alongside the announcement of HIMYF.

“Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of ‘How I Met Your Father,’” said Bays and Thomas. “We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the ‘HIMYM’ fans out there who waited for it.)”

As far as casting, Sophie will be played by Hillary Duff as she is available following the delay of the reboot of “Lizzie McGuire”. The rest of the cast has not been revealed, alongside who will play the voice of “future Sophie”.

Although there is no set release date for the HIMYM spinoff, with the setting taking place in 2021 it can be assumed that the show will be released before 2022 or at the very least early in the new year.

Fans won’t have to hold onto their ducky ties and red cowboy boots, which they are totally pulling off, much longer. The reboot is coming soon to Hulu and will be the talk of TV at some point in the very near future.
