Atalanta vs United Recap | Game Summary

Manchester United drew 2-2 with Atalanta in the tough atmosphere of Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Italy. United was down for most of the game, in a position that they are familiar with in their recent games where they have had to mount comebacks to keep their chances alive in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Group F is now led by both Manchester United and Villareal with seven points with two wins, one draw, and one loss for both sides. Atalanta is in third with five points and Young Boys is in last with three points. There are only two games left in the group stage to determine who moves on to the next round.

Let’s take a look at the goals that were scored by both sides in this matchup on Tuesday.

Atalanta vs United | Goals of the Game

Josip Ilicic (12’)

Ilicic was able to put one past David De Gea in a shot that should’ve been saved by the Spanish keeper. This goal put Atalanta on the front foot and put some pressure on Ole Solskjaer whose job has been on the line since United’s recent struggles.

This gave Atalanta the lead early as they had done in their previous Champions League match a couple of weeks ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo (45’+1’)

Cristiano Ronaldo opened up the scoring for United right before the end of the first half. There was some very good build up play that led to a Bruno Fernandez back heel to Cristiano Ronaldo right near the penalty spot that he slotted home.

Duvan Zapata (56’)

Both teams came out firing in the second half, but it was Atalanta and Zapata that broke through for a goal. The goal came from a through ball that left Zapata 1v1 with De Gea in which Zapata was able to scoop it over the outstretched hand of De Gea.

Cristiano Ronaldo (90’+1’)

In the dying moments of the game, Ronaldo put on his hero cape and equalized for United. This was one of the last chances of the game. The ball bounced around at the top of the box and then found Mason Greenwood’s foot in which he volleyed the ball up to Ronaldo who finished it with a volley for himself from the top of the box.

This was Ronaldo’s best goal that he has had this year in a United uniform and came at a perfect time to keep Manchester United at the top of the table. He has done this time and time again for this team that has been struggling to find its identity.

Next Champions League Match

The next week that Champions League play will resume is the week of 11/22. Manchester United will travel to Villareal on Tuesday 11/23 at 12:45 pm EST. Atalanta will travel to Young Boys on the same day at 3 pm EST.
