The Champions League reaches its halfway stage this week, as the third round of games are played in each of the groups. Wednesday will see some of the biggest clubs in the world in action, with Barcelona, Manchester United, and Chelsea all having huge games in their respective groups. But, what are the best bets for the fixtures in the Champions League on Wednesday?
More Misery For United & Barcelona?
The two sides that will have more attention on them than most will be Manchester United and Barcelona. Both are realistically fighting for their place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, with United currently sitting third in their group and Barcelona languishing at the bottom of theirs. The Red Devils have the tougher fixture of the two this week, as they come up against Group F leaders Atalanta.
The Italian side have scored three in two games. However, most worrying from a United perspective, they play with a back three; the same system that caused so many problems for the Red Devils against Leicester City on Saturday.
United players will certainly all need to work much harder than they did in that league game if they are to get any sort of positive result on Wednesday, but with the reluctance to play two holding midfielders, recent memories of Saturday’s hammering could resurface.
Barcelona have a dare-not-lose game against Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday at the Nou Camp. Defeat would leave them with a huge challenge on their hands, as they could potentially sit four points away from the team directly above them.
However, Kiev aren’t on the same level as Barcelona, as the Catalonia’s 3-1 win against Valencia at the weekend should give them enough confidence to get off the mark in the Champions League.
Goals Galore In Wednesday’s Games
There should be a huge number of goals in the games taking place on Wednesday. Bayern Munich travel to Benfica having scored 54 goals in their last 19 matches away from home in the Champions League, with Robert Lewandowski scoring a third of those. That could continue against a Benfica side that have already scored three goals themselves in the Champions League this season.
Chelsea welcome Swedish side Malmo to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday too. The Blues have struggled to get going in their first two games, but against such a vulnerable defense this week, they should more than make up for their low tally of goals. Malmo have already conceded seven in the two games that they have played, and conceded five against Chelsea in the two knockout games that they played in the Europa League in the 2018-19 season.
Young Boys and Villarreal also clash on Wednesday. Both sides have attacking quality as well as defensive vulnerabilities, which means another wager on over 2.5 goals may be a decent selection.
The Spanish side are bottom of Group F coming into the game, having conceded four and scored three in two games. Meanwhile, Young Boys have scored and conceded twice in the opening couple of rounds of games.
