The Champions League made its grand return a couple of weeks ago, and the race to reach the final in St Petersburg is now well underway. A number of huge sides slipped to defeats in that opening round of games, which means that a second straight loss should be avoided at all costs if they are to reach the knockout rounds in the new year. But, which selections should be made for the games taking place in Europe’s elite competition next week?
Bet On Beaten Sides To Bounce Back
A number of the elite club sides around Europe were beaten on the opening matchday, which means the pressure will be on them to bounce back next week. Inter Milan were beaten by Real Madrid despite dominating the fixture against the Spanish giants, and they face off against a difficult-looking Shakhtar Donetsk side on Tuesday.
This would have been a game to avoid in the past, but this isn’t the same Shakhtar side capable of picking up a huge win against Europe’s superpowers. Inter have started the new season well, despite losing Antonio Conte and Romelu Lukaku, and are already the highest scorers in Serie A. It could be a comfortable evening in the Ukraine for Inter on Tuesday.
Manchester United were also beaten in shocking circumstances in their opening game, as they went down 2-1 against Young Boys. A second straight defeat would see the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer increase, but there will be more than just three points on United’s mind on Wednesday, as they meet the side that beat them in the Europa League final in May.
Villarreal have endured a slow start to the season in Spain, and a comfortable Old Trafford fixture for United could continue their excellent home form at the start of the 2021-22 season.
- Pick: Inter Milan & Manchester United to win (Double) at +128
European Giants Collide
The Champions League is synonymous for the games pitting European giants against one another. There are two eye-catching ties taking place on matchday two this week. The pick of those games will take place in the French capital, as PSG will be looking for a first win of the group stages when Manchester City visit the Parc des Princes.
City started their campaign with a 6-3 hammering against RB Leipzig, but this is likely to be a much cagier game, with neither of the two favorites for the competition looking to give anything away. Lionel Messi is the big absentee for PSG, but a low-scoring match could be the best bet, as two of the previous three games have had under 2.5 goals.

Juventus also host Chelsea in a huge fixture in the Champions League on Wednesday. Both sides started their campaigns with victories. The Old Lady comfortably beat Malmo on the road, while the Blues scraped past Zenit St Petersburg at Stamford Bridge.
Romelu Lukaku could be the player to watch in this match, as he makes his return to Italy. He has already scored four goals this season and amassed a total of 24 goals in Serie A last term. Expect the 28-year-old to have a big say on his return to Italy.
- Pick: PSG vs Man City- Under 2.5 goals at +125
- Pick: Lukaku to score first against Juventus at +400
