Leicester City has been one of the best and most consistent teams in the Premier League since winning the league in 2015-16. However, surprisingly, Leicester City has won only one game this season, and is currently last in the league.
As a result, there is speculation that the team could be relegated this season despite competing in the Europa League last year. The next few weeks will have an important impact on whether or not the team is relegated.
Discussing Leicester City’s Start to the Season
Leicester City’s season did not begin the way they wanted it to. At the beginning of the season, no new players had joined Leicester City during the transfer window. The team did not win any of its first seven games of the season.
During August, Wesley Fofana departed the club for Chelsea. Following his departure, Leicester made their only summer transfer signing; Wout Faes, a 24-year-old center-back who joined the team from Stade Reims.
After their first 10 games of the season, Leicester is last in the Premier League and has only five points this season. The team’s only Premier League win so far this year was against Nottingham Forest, who are currently 19th in the league, on October 3.
This season, Leicester has had success scoring goals. The team has scored 15 goals, the eighth most in the league. However, Leicester City has allowed 24 goals, the most in the league; only two other teams have allowed more than 20 goals this season.
Leicester City has allowed the fifth most expected goals in the Premier League this season. If the team’s defense doesn’t improve, Leicester could be relegated this season.
Will Leicester City Be Relegated?
Most teams, including Leicester City, have already played more than 25% of their Premier League games. While there are several games and months of the season left, Leicester City will hope to play better soon and improve its position in the standings.
The good news for the team is its ability to score goals, which should allow Leicester to compete in most of its games this season. Leicester City has created the ninth most shots on goal per match, 13th most expected goals, 12th most big chances, and sixth most possession in the Premier League so far this year.
However, the team’s defense remains an area of concern, especially after the departure of Fofana. Unsurprisingly, the team that has conceded the most goals in a season has been relegated for four consecutive seasons since 2017-2018 when West Ham, who tied Stoke City with the most goals allowed in the league, finished 13th; Stoke City finished 19th and was relegated.
If Leicester City is going to avoid relegation, the team’s defense will almost certainly have to improve. Fortunately, the team is only currently four points behind Wolverhampton, who are in 17th place.
One way Leicester could improve during this season is through transfers in the January transfer window. The team is scheduled to play six more Premier League games before November 15th, when the league’s World Cup break begins. After that, Leicester City will only play two more games before the transfer window opens on January 1, 2023.
After only signing one player this summer, it isn’t clear whether or not Leicester City will be able to sign more players in January. If they are, it could provide a way for the team to avoid relegation this season.
There are still several games remaining this season, but Leicester City’s start to the season shows the team could be relegated. If the team is not able to allow fewer goals, they will almost certainly play in the EFL Championship for the first time since 2004.
