Game Recap

Manchester United took down Villarreal in the second half of Tuesday’s game by a score of 2-0 with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. This was Sancho’s first goal since joining the team this past summer. Ronaldo has scored in all of the five Champions League matches for Manchester United.

Villarreal had their chances to score by outshooting United, but David De Gea was able to make some top-class saves to keep the ball out of the back of the net. Geronimo Rulli, the Villarreal goalkeeper, also made some impressive saves to keep his side in the game.

It wasn’t until the 78th minute until Manchester United were able to break through with their first goal of the match. Manchester United were high pressing, and Fred forced an error that led to a bouncing ball in Ronaldo’s direction. He turned and chipped it over Rulli for the goal.

Jadon Sancho put the second goal away in what turned out to be a great team goal, starting from the back from the counterattack. The shot was hit well by Sancho and will provide a great confidence boost to a player who has been struggling to find his role on the squad.

Key Takeaways from the Game

Manchester United are on to the Round of 16

United sealed their fate on Tuesday with the win as they are now officially on to the Champions League Round of 16 and out of Group F. This came at a much-needed time as Manchester United have been struggling to win anything in the Premier League. Maybe this victory will jumpstart a team that is more talented than they are playing.

First Win Since Ole’s Sacking

Michael Carrick took over as the interim manager until United finds a permanent replacement after sacking Ole Solskjaer after United’s defeat at Watford. The game was a stalemate for most of the game, but Carrick changed the personnel in the game which was refreshing to see after many games with the same personnel and formation from Ole.

United are still looking for a replacement for their new manager with the possibilities of Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane. Michael Carrick also has the possibility of taking over the reins permanently for United, but that would all depend on his next results as interim manager.

Ronaldo’s Historic Champions League Season

Cristiano Ronaldo has shined in past Champions League seasons, and this one is no different. He has scored six goals in five Champions League appearances and has saved United from more of a downfall with his heroics. They will need his production throughout the Champions League if they want to make a deep run.

Next Matchups

Manchester United will travel to Chelsea in their next Premier League match to face the top of the table on Sunday at 11:30 am EST. The Red Devils will return to the Champions League pitch for their last group stage game on December 8th at home against Young Boys at 3 pm EST.
