Major League Soccer kicks off Week 18 with a late-night Friday matchup! The San Jose Earthquakes (#10) host the Vancouver Whitecaps (#13) on Friday at Paypal Park at 10:30 PM EST. These two teams have always been an entertaining matchup; this will be their first game of the season. They have both been performing decently as of late.
The Earthquakes have won two of their last five games, drawing the other three times; the Whitecaps have not lost a game since losing 4-0 to Real Salt Lake on July 8. This will be an exciting match, as both teams will aim to improve their standings with a win.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-2-3-1): James Marcinkowski, Shea Salinas, Oswaldo Alanis, Tanner Beason, Marcos Lopez, Florian Jungwirth, Jackson Yueill, Cade Cowell, Javier Lopez, Cristian Espinoza, Chris Wondolowski
VANCOUVER WHITECAPS (4-3-3): Maxime Crepeau, Cristian Gutierrez, Andy Rose, Ranko Veselinovic, Jake Nerwinski, Janio Bikel, Michael Baldisimo, Russell Teibert, Cristian Dajome, Brian White, Deiber Caicedo
San Jose Earthquakes Preview
Despite a sub-par record, the San Jose Earthquakes have managed to improve after a slow and lethargic start to the 2021 MLS campaign. They have only won two of their last seven games, but to be fair, they have not lost any of their last seven games either. The Earthquakes have something to prove on Friday.
Vancouver Whitecaps Preview
Historically, the Whitecaps are favored to come out on top. They have won 10 games out of 27 matches played between the two teams, with the Quakes winning eight. In this match, the Whitecaps’ biggest goal is to get that big win; they have had four straight away draws.
Unfortunately, forward Lucas Cavallini sustained a left knee injury in last weekend’s game versus the LA Galaxy, and he will be out for six weeks. Cavallini has scored three goals and two assists in 12 matches. Hopefully, the Whitecaps will adjust to this quickly and maintain their momentum going into this match.
At this point, draws are certainly not enough. This game needs to end with one team winning and the other losing, and the Whitecaps are particularly ready and desperate for a big W.
Earthquakes vs Whitecaps Pick
According to FanDuel, the San Jose Earthquakes are predicted to come out on top, with -145 odds. The Quakes have been improving as of late, and they will attempt to maintain their momentum and make some big plays to beat out the Whitecaps.
