It has been more than a month since the season started for most European soccer teams. The first international break of this season begins after this weekend’s games.

This international break will be used to prepare for this year’s World Cup, which begins in about two months on November 20. Over the first few weeks of the season, each league has already played multiple important games.

Premier League

Somewhat unexpectedly, Arsenal leads the Premier League after the first six games of the season. They started the season with five consecutive wins, before losing their first Premier League game at Old Trafford against Manchester United on September 4.

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland has had an incredible start to his Premier League career, and he leads the league with 10 goals. As a result, Manchester City is still the favorite to win the title despite currently finding themselves in second place.

Elsewhere, both Liverpool and Chelsea have had disappointing starts to the season. Liverpool is currently in ninth place, six points behind Arsenal. Chelsea has already made a managerial change this season, with Graham Potter replacing Thomas Tuchel. Potter’s first game is expected to be on Wednesday against Red Bull Salzburg, although he likely won’t manage a Premier League game for Chelsea until after the international break as their game this weekend was postponed due to preparations for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Tottenham has had a successful start to the season and is currently third in the standings, while Brighton & Hove Albion, Potter’s former team, is currently in fourth. Manchester United, currently in fifth, began the season with back-to-back losses, but since then, the team has won four straight Premier League games in Erik ten Hag’s first season.

La Liga

Barcelona had one of the most notable summer transfer windows of any team in Europe, as they completed the signing of several players, including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Jules Kounde.

The team will hope that means they can compete to win La Liga after finishing 13 points behind Real Madrid last season. Barcelona has had an extremely successful start to the season, and they have yet to lose a game.

Despite that, Barcelona is still second in La Liga, two points behind Real Madrid. Real Madrid has won every game they have played so far this season after winning the Champions League, La Liga, and the Supercopa de Espana last season.

Atletico Madrid is currently in seventh place with 10 points so far this year, while Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao have the same amount of points but are in fifth and sixth respectively due to goal difference.

Serie A

Last season’s Serie A season was extremely exciting, with AC Milan and Inter Milan finishing the season in first and second with just two points separating the two teams. This year both teams are favorites to win Serie A, along with several other teams.

Three teams have 14 points so far this season, but Napoli currently leads Serie A after a phenomenal start to the year. They lead the league in goals scored, and are currently unbeaten in their first six games this season. In addition, Napoli defeated Liverpool 4-1 in the Champions League earlier this year.

Atalanta, who finished last season in eighth place after finishing in third place the year prior, is currently in second; this weekend they have an important game against fifth-placed Roma. AC Milan is in third place, although they have the same amount of points as Napoli, while Udinese is in fifth.

Inter Milan is in sixth place, partially due to losing 3-2 to rivals AC Milan earlier this month. Lazio, who finished last season in fifth place, is currently in seventh. Most surprisingly, Juventus, who signed Angel Di Maria and Paul Pogba this summer, is currently in eighth place. Unfortunately, both Pogba and Di Maria are currently injured.

Union Berlin is currently leading the Bundesliga, and they have already defeated RB Leipzig 2-1 and drawn with Bayern Munich this season. This is only Union Berlin’s fourth season in the Bundesliga after being promoted to the league after the 2018-19 season.

SC Freiburg is currently in second, one point behind Union Berlin, and Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, and Borussia Dortmund are all one point behind Freiburg in third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, two teams who finished in the top four last season, have not played well at the start of this year. Leverkusen is currently in 17th place and has already lost four games this season. Meanwhile, Leipzig is currently in 10th place and is six points behind Union Berlin. Elsewhere, Wolfsburg, a team that finished fourth in the Bundesliga only two seasons ago, is currently in 16th after finishing last season in 12th place.

While Union Berlin leads the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich remains the favorite to win the league title. Bayern Munich leads the league in goals scored so far this season, with 19 in only six games, and also leads the league in goal difference ahead of next week’s international break.

Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain, as expected, currently leads Ligue 1 after seven games. PSG has been incredible so far this year, scoring 25 goals while allowing just four. A 1-1 draw against Monaco is the only time PSG hasn’t won so far this season.

Similarly to last season, Marseille is in second place. Marseille, like PSG, has 19 points so far this season, and the team has won all of its league games but one. However, Marseille has scored only 15 goals as compared to PSG’s 25, although they have also only allowed four goals so far this season.

Monaco, who finished last season in third place, is currently in seventh after multiple players departed the team this summer. Last season’s seventh-placed finishers Lens are currently in third place and they already have won an important game against Stade Rennais, who are currently in sixth place.

FC Lorient is currently in third, despite finishing in 16th place last season. Meanwhile, Lyon is currently in fourth place, and Alexandre Lacazette, who returned to the club this summer, is tied for the team lead in goals with four so far this season.

Nice, who finished fifth last season, is currently in 12th place and has won just two games this year. Lille, who won Ligue 1 two seasons ago, is in eighth place after finishing 10th in Ligue 1 last year.
