Liverpool was on another round of their Europa group stage action with Toulouse, where they encountered a disappointing 3-2 loss against their hosts at the Municipal Stadium. Kelleher, the Liverpool goalie, could not stop three goals past him, adding to one of the poor shows from the keeper.
Klopp’s team never managed to show their dominance as they went 2-0 at halftime while Toulouse played an impressive match in front of their jubilating fans on their home tough. Goals from Aron, Dalinga, and Magri were enough to help Toulouse emerge victorious in their Group E match.
This was Liverpool’s second defeat of the season. VAR review denied Liverpool a stoppage-time equalizer after Jarell Quansah scored. Joe Cole believed the referee got the entire call right by canceling the goal due to Alexis Mac Allister’s earlier handball.
Kliopp, on his side, believed that Liverpool was denied a legit goal, ending in the disastrous defeat. Liverpool’s squad had nine changes from the one that played Luton in the Premier League.
An own goal took Liverpool back into the game, making it 3-1. Another stunner from Diota rekindled Liverpool’s efforts of equalizing by pushing them to 3-2 until the last-minute equalizer was canceled, dashing the Red’s hopes of drawing with Toulouse.
Despite the defeat, the Reds are still in Group E with 9 points, while Touoise are two behind Liverpool. Union Saint-Gilloise lost to Lask and is behind Toulouse.
Klopp was not satisfied with the referee’s decision as he noted,
“We scored a third goal,” Klopp told TNT Sports. “I think it is a goal, 100%. “It is pretty long ago that triggered the situation. I am not even sure it touches the hand at all.”
Caoimhin Kelleher, the goalkeeper, was not at his best as he didn’t stop any of the three goals past him. Although the first goal was a deflection, his shot-stopping ability was below average. Matip Joel was also poor, as he missed a scoring chance, and his questionable defense positioning also contributed to Touluse’s goal.
Tsimikas was also to blame for Toulouse’s first goal, as he did not provide the best shield, leading to a loose pass. He was also not excellent during attacks. The player was hooked at half-time, and Joe Gomez was taken to play out of his natural position.
Generally, Livererool’s performance was not the best, and the team couldn’t go past Toulouse. However, the Klopp lead team will likely return in their next match. After learning the mistakes that led to the loss, Klopp will make critical changes in his squad as he prepares for the weekend premier league encounter with Brentford.
Liverpool’s first-eleven squad will be back in action at the weekend and at least make a win after their late equalizer at Luton redeemed them. A win for Liverpool may get them back to the winning ways as they aim for a top 4 finish during the first half of the season.
