Manchester City’s fine form in the 2022/23 season may reward them with three major trophies. Pep Guardiola’s side has produced a remarkable performance.
The team has shown the attitude to win the English Premier League for the third time, where they are still the defending champions after winning it consecutively.
If Man City beats Chelsea in the coming fixture, they’ll be crowned winners at Etihad. On the other side, their closest competitor, Arsenal, will finish second after a competitive Premier League performance.
It was Arsenal’s best performance for years. The Gunners fans have long waited to play in the Champions League, and now the Arsenal slot is confirmed as they eye the 2023/24 Champions League season.
Pep under Pressure to Win More Major Trophies for Manchester City
In his coaching career, Pep Guardiola has won nearly everything with Manchester City, but not the Champions League. It will be a historic moment for Guardiola and the team if he destroys Inter Milan to lift the much-respected trophy in Europe.
Under Guardiola’s management, Manchester City reached the Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history in the 2020-2021 season. However, they were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea in the final, denying Guardiola and Manchester City the coveted trophy.
In the 2021-22 season, City reached the Semifinals after being knocked out by Real Madrid. The pair met in the 2022/23 semi-finals, where Pep Guadiola’s side humiliated Carlo Ancelotis’s side with a 5-1 aggregate to advance into the finals of the Champions League.
Based on his recent performance, Pep Guardiola’s side are the favorite to win the Champions League in the 2022-23 season. Winning the trophy will also be one of the wishes of Erling Haaland’s desire to win the Champions League.
Other Trophies Lined Up for the Citizens
In the battle of trophies, Pep Guardiola’s side is advantaged as they are already in the finals for the FA Cup, where it will be a Manchester affair as they meet their closest rivals Manchester United.
Citizens will seek a way to secure the trophy and make history in European football. In 1999, under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United won the English Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League, becoming the only English premier league to do so.
By winning the Premier League, FA, and Champions League, Manchester City will have secured a treble. When asked about winning the three trophies, Pep replied:
“In the Premier League, we are close. We know we need one more game, and I would say we play against our neighbors [Manchester United] and against an Italian team [Internazionale] in the finals. The season is really, really good, now we have to lift it. We are close, and of course, we are going to try.”
“We are there, we can think about it, we can visualize it. We are three games away. One each of the competitions, we can do it.”
The Motivation Behind Citizen’s Win
Manchester City’s focus on the champions league was attributed to the pain they endured in the last-minute trash by Real Madrid at the same stage last year. Pep revealed how the team felt after the humiliation by Madrid.
“It was so hard and tough last season. In that moment, we had to swallow poison, and football and sport always gives you another chance. When the draw was Madrid, I said ‘Yeah I want it.’ I wanted it because I think today everything was there.”
Now that Citizens are in the final stages of making history, will they go against all odds and win the TREBLE?
