You can tell the festive period is upon us, as the relentless nature of the Premier League picks up this midweek, with all 20 teams in action. Teams in the English top-flight will have little rest bite between now and the middle of January, as the biggest clubs will be playing at least twice a week.
However, which picks should gamblers be making for this upcoming round of fixtures in the English Premier League matchday 14?
Massive Fixtures Headline Midweek Round of Games
There are some massive fixtures at both ends of the table this week, with a fascinating Merseyside derby taking place on Wednesday, and Manchester United welcoming Arsenal to Old Trafford on Thursday. Everton boss Rafael Benitez will be feeling the pressure ahead of the visit of Liverpool, as the Toffees have dropped to 14th after losing four of their last five. A visit of their local rivals will do little to improve confidence, as the Toffees ended a 20-game wait for a victory against the Reds last season.
You have to go all the way back to the 1984-85 season for the last time Everton recorded two straight wins against their Merseyside rivals. Liverpool is unbeaten in their last two games at Goodison Park, but eight of the nine games have ended in draws, which includes the last four. However, it would be difficult to see anything other than an away win this week, as the Reds have looked in dominant form in their most recent fixtures.
Ralf Ragnick could be in charge of Manchester United for the first time on Thursday should his Visa be processed in time. However, United have failed to beat the Gunners in their last six meetings. Away wins at Old Trafford for Arsenal are a rarity though, and they will be looking for back-to-back wins at the Theatre of Dreams for the first time since 1979.
Confidence looked to be back within the United camp after a 2-0 win against Villarreal, and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, and they will be boosted by the fact that they have lost two of the 14 league games that they have played on a Thursday. However, we wouldn’t be confident enough to say United will get the points, but over 2.5 goals could be the way to go.
Big Games Towards Bottom Of The League
There will be a huge game at St James’ Park on Tuesday, as Newcastle United looks to finally claim a first win of the season. Norwich City is the visitors, as they look to continue their three-game unbeaten run. The Canaries could go level on points with 17th placed Leeds with a win, which would demonstrate an excellent upturn in their form.
Norwich has won two of their previous three league games against Newcastle, while the Toon has lost six of their last eight midweek fixtures. The Canaries are operating as a team at present, and look much better in the final third. Another win this week could be huge for their survival chances, and we would be tempted to stick with Dean Smith’s side.
Wolves vs Burnley also looks to be a huge game at the foot of the table for the visitors. Burnley should be the fresher of the two teams, as their game against Spurs was called off on Sunday. The Clarets have won once in 12 games this term, but have failed to lose to Wolves in their last five games. Burnley did the double over Wolves last season, but it’s likely that the draw may be the outcome this week in a battle between two sides that are both struggling for goals this term.
- Liverpool to beat Everton @ -275
- Manchester United vs Arsenal (Over 2.5 Goals) @ -138
- Norwich City to beat Newcastle @ +290
- The draw (Wolves vs Burnley) @ +250
