During European qualifications for men, there are a couple of you who are watching Women’s World Cup 2019. The Women’s World Cup 2019 is the eighth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and this year it is playing in France, running from last Friday through July 7.
After they won FIFA Men’s World Cup 2018 (winning against Croatia in final 4-2), France is now hosting the Women’s World Cup. In the opening match on Friday, France won against South Korea 4-0 with two goals by Wendie Renard, along with tallies by Eugenie Le Sommer and Amandine Henry.
The United States has won five straight matches. Australia, Belgium, South Africa, New Zealand, and Mexico all fell. Only Australia scored three goals, and in every of other of the four matches, they kept a clean sheet. Just in these last five matches, we could see how they are superior and efficient regardless of the opponent, with a goal difference of 22-3.
When we do the math, this is more than four scored goals on average. Pretty impressive. The United States, along with Germany and England, is considered as one of the best women’s international teams in history, and with this consideration on mind, they are one of the favorites to win the World Cup, along with host France and Germany. As current World Champion from last WC 2015 in Canada, they are hoping to defend the title of the best in the world.
If we look at Thailand’s match history, at first sight, we can tell that this is going to be an easy match for the United States. In their last five matches, Thailand has five losses. Belgium, France, Nigeria, Italy, and Mexico each defeated them, with a goal difference of 18-1. They scored one goal to Mexico. With these statistics, they are facing one of the most powerful teams in the world. On average, Thailand received more than three goals per game, which is something that the United States will abuse against them. Thailand qualified for the WC 2015 but failed to qualify to the knock-out stage, and this is going to be their second appearance on World Cup.
Head to head
In 2016, in an international friendly game, the United States played against Thailand and won 9-0. Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick, Alex Morgan added two goals, and Christen Press, Heather O’Reilly, Tobin Heath, and Crystal Dunn scored one apiece. After the first five minutes of the game, Thailand was down 3-0.
This generation in USA squad is tremendously experienced, while out of 23 players invited to this tournament, eight of them have over 100 caps for the national team. These eight women have more than 300 goals combined, which is more than three-quarters of the 433 goals that players in this squad have in total for the United States.
As we mentioned before, this is the second World Cup for Thailand, and they brought their best players to this tournament, in the hope that they will qualify to the knock-out stage. In 2015, they won against Ivory Coast, but losses against Germany and Norway cost them the knock-out stage.
