Thursday sees the first of two playoffs matches between VfB Stuttgart and Union Berlin, who are fighting for their spot in Bundesliga next season. Stuttgart finished 16th out of 18 positions in Bundesliga and play against the third-place team in Bundesliga 2. FC Köln as first place and Paderborn as the second-place team secured their spots in top tier league in Germany.

Season Review

One of the teams that play Europe League a couple of years ago, but since then can’t find consistency and found their secure spot in Bundesliga. Yeah, we are talking about Stuttgart. After they played in Europe League in season 2012-2013, they were fighting for their spot in Bundesliga in 2014-2015 and secured it, but in the next season, they were not so happy, and they were relegated to Bundesliga 2. Luckily for them, they spent just one season in Bundesliga 2, while they finished in second place in season 2015-2016.

After their promotion, one of the best players in Stuttgart history, and Bundesliga title-winning striker Mario Gomez returned to the team from fellow Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg. With him on the team, they finished this season as a seventh-ranked team in Bundesliga.

This season, they spent the whole season in the relegation zone, moving from 16th to 18th place. Luckily for them, they won the last two important home games and finished at 16th place, and they have a chance to redeem to the fans for a season to forget, and stay in Bundesliga.

Union Berlin is one of the teams that has never experienced playing in the highest level of German Football. Since 2009, they have played in Bundesliga 2, and this season, they are a little step closer to play in Bundesliga. A team that finished the season with more draw matches than winning matches in this season (14W, 15D), and the team that has at least lost matches this season, just five defeats in an entire season.

VfB Stuttgart vs. Union Berlin – Betting preview and prediction

In the playoff for the Bundesliga, we can forget about their previous results and form of the teams and players. For these two teams, these two matches are everything. For one team, it means staying in the top tier of German Football, and for the other team, it means the historical placement in Bundesliga.

Stuttgart has the second-worst defense in Bundesliga with 70 received goals and 32 scored goals in 34 matches, while Union Berlin has the best defense in the Bundesliga 2 with 33 received goals in previous season (to compare, the second-best defense has 42 received goals in 34 matches), and 54 scored goals in 34 matches.

We found a good odd of 1.85 on both teams to score. It will be an intense match, where Union needs at least one goal in guest, that they can secure promotion at home on May 27.
