Franchise History

The City of Seattle tried for years to secure a franchise for the National Football League. On June 4, 1974, th dream came true and they were the 28th franchise to secure an agreement. They had an arrangement to play at the 64,984 seat Kingdome.

A campaign began to name the team and 1741 different names were submitted but on June 17, 1975 the team selected Seahawks. Ticket sales began and 59,000 seats were sold in 27 days. Jack Patera was hired on January 3, 1976 as the head coach of the Seahawks. In the first year they finished 2-12 in the NFC. In 1977, the club was moved to the AFC and completed the year with a 9-7 record.

Chuck Knox came along as the head coach in the 1980’s and he had a nine year stretch that had the team win 83 games. Knox led them to their first AFC championship. In 1984, the team was 12-4 and played in the playoffs.

The team won the Western Division in 1988. Many feel the best player to wear a Seahawks jersey may have been wide receiver Steve Largent. He was elected to the National Football League Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
