January 7th update– Tody marks the one week mark from the start of the championships rounds. Today, begins the qualifying sessions for many of the lesser and hopeful entrants into the big event.

Every January, the dawn of a new year brings a fresh start, a renewed sense of optimism, and for the tennis world, a chance to kick off the Grand Slam season in one of the most sparkling settings in sports. The fans flee from the various frozen climates of the Northern Hemisphere and head down under to gorgeous Australia where the natives in mid-summer form enjoy the sun, surf, and scenery and the relaxed upbeat atmosphere that defines the Australian Open.

Recharged after the end of the year break, the players arrive at Melbourne Park brimming of positivity, dreaming of the possibilities. It’s a new beginning played against several backdrops and in front of crazy fans. This is the Australian Open!

NOTE: The Australian Open has been given permission by the grand slam board to implement a decisive super tiebreak (first to 10 points instead of seven, win by two) at 6-6 in a final set, perhaps as soon as for the 2019 tournament.

Who’s In?

As we get closer to the 2019 Australian Open, we find they have commitments from the top 101 men and top 102 women’s players in the world to play in this event.

In the women’s field, #1 Simona Halep and #3 Caroline Wozniacki along with current #16 player Serena Williams will be playing.

The big three of tennis, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray all have indicated they will be playing in the 22019 Australian Open.

Key on-court initiatives for Australian Open 2019 include:

Prize money increased to AUD $60.5 million
25 second Serve Clock for all main draw matches
Electronic Review System on all 16 match courts
Maintaining 32 seeds in the main draw and in qualifying for both men and women
Heat Stress Index to replace Extreme Heat Policy
Increased Australian Open qualifying draw for women, from 96 to 128 players
Qualifying tournament to start a day earlier, on Tuesday 8 January
A continued trial of coaching in qualifying and juniors
Tie Break Tens returns to MCA on Wednesday 9 January
High-profile practice matches to be held at MCA on each day of qualifying.
