Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal are rumored will be matched again, some sources said.
After defending his belt against his former teammate Gilbert Burns, Kamaru Usman said that anyone can challenge him in the Octagon. However, “The Nigeran Nightmare” called out a familiar opponent in Jorge Masvidal, who he beat back in July of 2020 at UFC 251 via decision. Masvidal accepted the fight on a few days’ notice because his original opponent Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID.
The confident champ even believes that Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (ranked #4) knows that he cannot be beaten. Even #3 contender, Leon Edwards who hasn’t fought since 2019, had something to say about this potential reach. He stated that, “Jorge Masvidal will never be UFC champion, is just another ‘easy payday’ for Kamaru Usman”.
Although Kamaru Usman’s confidence isn’t unwarranted, UFC fans should not sell short the capabilities of Jorge Masvidal who holds the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history (5 seconds). He also proved himself highly capable with wins over the likes of contenders like Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz.
One interesting fact regarding Kamaru Usman is that he has been essentially perfect throughout his UFC career. Within the UFC he has a record of 13-0 and has hardly ever been scratched inside the cage. With as dominant a resume as Usman has, he’s left a lot of people wondering if there is really any 170lb mixed martial artist alive that can beat this man.
Although Masvidal lost all 5 rounds of their last fight, he has the striking power and speed necessary to knock out someone like Usman. Saying that it is not a question of Masvidals striking but rather can he wrestle with someone as large and skilled as Kamaru.
It was pretty clear to the viewers that Usman is simply a much larger and stronger person.
He can easily control Masvidal against the cage in their first fight. This led to a rather boring win for Usman. But this time Usman swears to finish the fight.
Although nothing has been signed regarding the rematch for the UFC welterweight belt, the UFC media is speculating that UFC President Dana White is potentially looking at having Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal headline as coaches in the next season of the hit show “The Ultimate Fighter”. If this were to be the case, it would be the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter” since November of 2018.
It is clear that TUF has a special place in Dana White’s heart as it made MMA a notable sport in the United States and around the world back in 2005. Right now, the Contender Series is the way to introduce new prospects. Even Masvidal’s management tweeted that they would accept a Usman vs Masvidal on TUF.
Although some question Masvidal’s abilities to beat Usman inside the octagon. There’s no doubting that Jorge Masvidal is one of the most entertaining and unpredictable personalities outside of the cage within the organization. An example of Masvidals unpredictability came March 16th, 2019 when Jorge Masvidal (mid TV interview) threw 3 punches at welterweight contender Leon Edwards.
A victory in the rematch will simply prove that Usman is the best fighter in the division. If that is the case, expect Colby Covington to be the next man up.
